Step 1: Ensure the gas regulator is set to the full bottle and that the gas bottle is turned on.

4. Pre-Trip Caravan Maintenance Checklist

Before you hit the open road, it’s essential to ensure your caravan is in top condition. Follow this checklist for peace of mind, ensuring your journey is as smooth as possible.

  • Secure the Couplings: Check all couplings for tightness, including override, hydraulic, and fixed types. Inspect safety chains for corrosion.
  • Brakes Check: Test the brakes at low speeds and check the pads for wear or rust. Ensure the handbrake is working freely.
  • Wheel and Tyre Inspection: Inspect tyres for tread depth, correct pressure, and any damage. Listen for any unusual wheel bearing sounds.
  • Lighting Check: Ensure all lights (internal and external) are functioning, and carry spare bulbs or lights for emergencies.
  • Power Up: Charge all batteries, ensuring your appliances are working before setting out.
  • Water Systems: Check water tanks and pipes for leaks or damage.
  • Climate Control: Ensure the air conditioning and heating systems are working to keep you comfortable in all weather.

By preparing your caravan with these checks, you’re guaranteed a successful and enjoyable trip.

5. How to Tighten Caravan Wheel Nuts

Properly tightening your caravan’s wheel nuts is essential for safety on the road. Follow these steps to ensure everything is secure before setting off.

Step 1: Set your torque wrench to 150. Tighten the top wheel nut until you hear a click.

Step 2: Tighten the bottom wheel nut to ensure equal tension.

Step 3: Repeat this process for all wheel nuts, tightening opposite nuts after each.

Step 4: Do a final check to ensure all wheel nuts are equally tightened.

Always check your wheel nuts before and after long trips to ensure safety.

9. Caravan Towing Weights: A Guide

When towing a caravan, it’s crucial to match your vehicle’s towing capacity with the caravan’s weight. At New Line Caravans, we offer a variety of lightweight and hybrid caravans, but it’s important to check the weight limits before you start your adventure. Overweight towing can lead to dangerous situations, including loss of control and insurance issues.

Caravan Weights

The main caravan weights are:

  • Tare Weight: Weight of the caravan when empty.
  • Aggregate Trailer Mass (ATM): Maximum weight of the caravan when fully loaded.
  • Payload: The weight difference between Tare Weight and ATM, showing how much you can load.
  • Tow Ball Weight (TBM): The downward weight on the caravan’s coupling.
  • Gross Trailer Mass (GTM): The weight on the caravan’s axles while towing.

Tow Vehicle Weights

Key weights for your tow vehicle include:

  • Tare Weight: The vehicle’s weight without passengers or cargo.
  • Kerb Weight (KW): The vehicle’s weight with a full tank of fuel.
  • Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM): Maximum weight the vehicle can carry, including passengers and cargo.
  • Towing Capacity: The maximum weight your vehicle can tow.
  • Gross Combination Mass (GCM): The combined weight of your vehicle and caravan when towing.

10. How to Remove the ARK750 Jockey Wheel

The jockey wheel is a key tool for manoeuvring your caravan easily. Follow these simple steps to safely undo and stow the jockey wheel on your New Line Caravan.

Step 1: After securely hitching your caravan to the tow ball and fastening the safety chain, wind the jockey wheel down until the caravan’s weight is fully transferred to the tow ball.

Step 2: Once the jockey wheel is fully lowered and the weight is off, pull out the retention handles on both sides of the wheel.

Step 3: Remove the handle from the pillar of the jockey wheel and set it aside.

Step 4: Rotate the jockey wheel anti-clockwise to swing it upwards and tuck it underneath the caravan’s stone guard.

Step 5: Push the retention handles back into position and check that the wheel is securely stowed.

Step 6: Store the handle safely in your vehicle or caravan, and you’re ready to head off on your next adventure.
